Symptoms
- Symptoms can range from mild to life threatening
- Glandular infections occur when the lymph nodes closest to the tick bite are swollen and a high fever is present.
- Ulcerglandular infections occur when the lymph nodes closest to the tick bite are swollen, a high fever is present, and there is a skin ulcer at the site of tick attachment.
- Skin biopsy or secretion can be visualized under a microscope using a gram stain or fluorescently labelled antibodies to identify the presence of Francisella tularensis.
Diagnosis and Treatment
CDC Treatment Recommendation
- Adults: Streptomycin, 1g IM twice daily
- Gentamicin, 5 mg/kg IM or IV once daily†
- Children: Streptomycin, 15 mg/kg IM twice daily (should not exceed 2 gm/d)
- Gentamicin, 2.5 mg/kg IM or IV 3 times daily†
